A Rosewood Cross

A beautiful and sensitive depiction of the crucifixion on this cross-piece of wood certainly inspired my imagination. I have no idea of its provenance but its primitive structure and painting indicate it is probably late 18th century/early 19th century and, I believe, of Romanian origin. I am sure it would have been part of an original cross and one can only imagine how it was broken up and desecrated during turbulent times in Europe. Clearly, it was later found and treasured and found its way to England.

I have now restored this exquisite item to its original purpose as a cross by setting it in simple Rosewood following a Romanian design. This powerful image can be appreciated on many levels: as a work of art with an almost certain romantic and troubled past; or as a potent symbol at the heart of Christian faith.
